No hay guerra civil en Siria

Aunque últimamente se la reconocen como una “Guerra Civil” en los medios de comunicación occidentales, sin embargo los expertos en Siria saben perfectamente que la revolución en Siria aún no es una guerra civil pero puede convertirse en una de un momento a otro.
Al-Assad tiene simpatizantes de todos los grupos sociales en Siria, y la revolución también es plural y goza de amplio apoyo. La única diferencia es que a pesar de su diversidad, los seguidores de Al-Assad se han convertido en una minoría gracias a las intransigencias de Al-Assad. Esta etiqueta de 'Guerra Civil' que lleva unos cuantos meses solamente, fue introducida por el Comité Internacional de la Cruz Roja (ICRC siglas en Inglés) el 14 de julio del 2012. El ICRC es el guardián de las Convenciones de Génova que establece las normas de la guerra. Entonces esta agencia política con sede en Suiza pensó que el actualizar el conflicto a 'guerra civil' ¡las leyes internacionales le permitirán mandar ayudas humanitarias a ese país!



Además de la ingenuidad de una organización que se niega a entender la política de los conflictos por temor de que pueden limitar o bloquear su acceso a las zonas de conflicto alrededor del mundo (hay una diferencia entre “No puedo llamar a la pala como pala” y “no quiero entender porque una pala no es una pleta”. De hecho, una vez tuve una pregunta poco inteligente que subraya este problema de un político importante, él no estaba seguro por qué la comunidad siria en el extranjero esta a favor de la revolución y me preguntó si era porque todos ellos nacieron de padres de oposición exiliados!). Así que además de ingenua y el terrible desprecio a los grandes sacrificios de todos los sirios de las diferentes sectas y etnias, esta tonta etiqueta por el ICRC ignoró, pasó por alto y oscureció la realidad qué está sucediendo en el terreno sirio, como la realidad de que no habido ni una sola masacre en contra de los Alauitas ha sido registrada en las zonas controladas por la oposición hasta el momento. Esto demuestra que los sirios son conscientes y saben bien que muchos de sus hermanos alauitas son víctimas como ellos.

Sin embargo, ese no es el punto. El punto es que soy incapaz de responder a esta pregunta: ¡¿porque aun no ha comenzado la guerra civil en Siria a pesar de 50, 000 muertos y todo lo que ha ocurrido?! Siempre me hago esta pregunta cada vez que tengo un video como este de los Neonazistas escupiendo odio ciego en contra de gente inocente. No tengo una respuesta excepto, que tal vez los sirios ,que sorprendieron a todo el mundo con su revolución, demuestran que cada uno de los llamados “expertos en Siria” no posean mas que cualidades estoicas equivocadas no precedentes de los tiempos modernos.

Esta gran paciencia ha sido puesta a prueba durante los últimos 21 meses con un promedio de 200 muertos al día entre ellos mujeres y niños asesinados en las formas más brutales. Lo que está sucediendo es más allá de la capacidad del ser humano para ser testigo y muchos como yo que nos preocupa que esta paciencia pueda agotarse un día y sumir a Siria en un conflicto prolongado que podría durar décadas. Si esto sucede las consecuencias podrían ser catastróficas no sólo para Siria, sino para la región entera y la paz mundial.
Los sirios sueñan con el día cuando nuestras instituciones internacionales, estructuras, y procesos serán capaces de responder efectivamente a los conflictos, apartando la política y los intereses de grandes poderes. Hasta ese día, el mundo no verá la paz.

Although it’s now, more often than not, labeled as 'civil war' in western media, real Syria experts know the revolution in Syria is not yet a civil war but can become one any time now. Assad has backers from all social groups in Syria, and the movement is also pluralistic and enjoys wide-spread support. The only difference is that despite their diversity, Assad supporters have subsided into a small minority thanks to Assad’s intransigence. This label 'civil war' is in fact only a few months old. It was introduced by The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) on July 14, 2012. The ICRC is the guardian of the Geneva Conventions setting down the rules of war. The apolitical Swiss-based agency thought that by upgrading the conflict to ‘civil war’, international humanitarian law would apply throughout the country!

Besides the naiveté of an organization that refuses to understand the politics of conflicts lest that would restrict or block their access to conflict zones around the world (there’s a difference between ‘I can’t call a spade a spade’ and ‘I don’t want to understand why a spade is not a trowel’. In fact, I once got a most unintelligent question that underscores this problem from one of their main guys in the US: he wasn't sure why the Syrian American community was pro-revolution and asked whether that was because they were all born to exiled opposition parents!!!!). So besides the naiveté and the terrible insult to the heavy sacrifices of all Syrians of different sects and ethnicities, this crass labeling by ICRC ignored, overlooked, and obscured the facts of what’s actually going on on the ground, such as the fact that not a single massacre against the Alawites has been registered in the opposition-controlled areas yet. This proves that Syrians know better and that they are aware that a lot of their Alawite brethren are victims like them.

That’s not the point, though. The point is that I’m unable to answer this question: how come a civil war has not started in Syria yet despite 50,000 deaths and all that has occurred?! I always ask myself this question every time I get a video like this of neo-Nazis spewing out blind hatred against innocent people. I do not have an answer except that maybe the Syrians that surprised the whole world with their revolution proving every single so-called Syria expert wrong possess stoical qualities unheard of in modern times.

This great patience has been being tested for 21 months now with an average death toll of 200 a day and women and children slain in the most brutal ways. What’s happening is beyond the capacity of human beings to even witness and many like me worry this patience may actually run out one day engulfing Syria in protracted conflict that could last for decades. If that happens the consequences will be catastrophic not just for Syria, but for the entire region and for world peace.


Syrians dream of a day when we have international institutions, structures, and processes capable of responding effectively to conflicts aside from the politics and interests of the great powers
Until such day, the world will not see peace.
